Key Expressions in This Lesson

미용실에서 오가는 말은 몇 마디로 정해져 있습니다. 아래 여섯 문장은 좌우가 한 쌍의 대화가 아니라 각각 따로 익히는 문장입니다. 먼저 눈에 담고 본문으로 들어가십시오.
Only a few lines pass in a salon. The two columns are not paired dialogue; each sentence is learned on its own. Take them in first, then move into the main text.

1. 예약할 때 하는 말
What You Say When You Book

 

한국 미용실은 예약을 받고 움직이는 곳이 대부분입니다. 예약하는 그 순간에 물어야 할 것이 있습니다.
Most Korean salons run on reservations, and there is something you need to ask at the moment you book.

여기서 쓰는 표현부터 배워봅시다. 전화나 앱으로 예약할 때 오가는 말입니다.

 Ask about an English-speaking designer when you book. Asking after you arrive is too late.

영어 상담이 가능한 디자이너가 있어도 근무 시간대가 정해져 있는 경우가 많습니다. 홍대와 명동, 강남 일대에는 외국인 응대 경험이 많은 매장이 몰려 있어 상대적으로 수월합니다.
Even when a salon has an English-speaking designer, their hours are often fixed. Hongdae, Myeongdong, and Gangnam have a concentration of salons used to international clients, which makes it easier.

한국 미용실에는 디자이너 등급제가 있습니다. 경력에 따라 등급이 나뉘고 상위 등급을 지정하면 지정료가 붙습니다. 반대로 지정하지 않으면 균일가를 적용하는 매장이 많으므로, 비용을 아끼고 싶다면 매장에 맡기시면 됩니다.
Korean salons use a designer grading system. Grades follow years of experience, and requesting a higher grade adds a designation fee. Many salons apply a flat rate if you do not request anyone, so leaving the choice to them keeps the cost down.

해외에서 미리 잡아 두고 싶다면 외국 카드로 결제되는 사전 예약 플랫폼을 쓰는 방법도 있습니다. 언어 부담 없이 시간과 금액을 확정하고 갈 수 있습니다.
If you want to lock it in from abroad, booking platforms that take foreign cards are an option. You can fix the time and the price without any language pressure.

 

 

2. 상담할 때 하는 말
What You Say in the Consultation

 

자리에 앉으면 자르기 전에 상담을 합니다. 여기서 나온 말이 그대로 결과가 되므로 이 단계가 전부입니다.
Once you sit down, a consultation comes before any cutting. What is said here becomes the result, so this step is everything.

여기서 쓰는 표현부터 배워봅시다. 거울 앞에서 오가는 말입니다.

한국 미용실은 사진을 보고 상담하는 문화가 자리를 잡았습니다. 휴대폰에 원하는 스타일 사진을 저장해 가면 한국어가 서툴러도 뜻이 정확히 전해집니다.
Consulting from photos is an established habit in Korean salons. Save the styles you want on your phone and your meaning gets across however shaky your Korean.

다듬어만 주세요와 너무 짧지 않게 해 주세요는 짝으로 기억하십시오. 길이를 크게 바꾸고 싶지 않을 때 쓰는 말이며, 특히 뒤엣것은 자르기 전에 반드시 말해야 합니다. 자른 다음에는 되돌릴 방법이 없습니다.
Remember 다듬어만 주세요 and 너무 짧지 않게 해 주세요 as a pair. They are what you use when you do not want a big change, and the second must be said before the cutting starts. Once it is cut, there is no way back.

앞머리만 잘라 주세요는 돈을 아끼는 문장입니다. 한국에는 앞머리만 다듬는 메뉴가 따로 있고 값이 전체 커트보다 훨씬 쌉니다. 몇 천 원 수준인 매장도 많습니다.
앞머리만 잘라 주세요 saves you money. Korea has a separate menu item for bangs alone, priced far below a full cut, often only a few thousand won.

 

 

3. 자르는 중에 하는 말
What You Say While the Scissors Move

 

가위가 움직이기 시작한 뒤에도 말할 수 있습니다. 오히려 가만히 있는 쪽이 위험합니다.
You can still speak up after the scissors are moving. Staying silent is the riskier choice.

무엇을 청하는지 먼저 갈라 두십시오.
Sort out what you are actually asking for first.

 지금 길이가 딱 좋아요 is a stop signal.

원하는 길이에 이르렀다고 느끼는 순간 바로 말하십시오. 한국 미용실에서는 이 말을 들으면 그 지점에서 정리에 들어갑니다.
Say it the moment you feel the length is where you want it. In a Korean salon that line moves the stylist straight into finishing.

무게만 덜고 싶다면 숱, 자연스러운 흐름을 원한다면 질감 처리, 스타일을 바꾸고 싶다면 레이어드 컷이라고 말하는 편이 정확합니다. 세 말을 섞어 쓰면 원하지 않은 결과가 나옵니다.
Say thinning for less weight, texturizing for a natural flow, and a layered cut for a change of style. Mixing the three words is how you end up with something you did not want.

 

 

4. 마무리와 계산에서 하는 말
What You Say at the Finish and the Register

 

자르고 나면 감기고 말리는 순서로 넘어갑니다. 계산까지 세 문장이면 끝납니다.
After the cut comes the wash and the dry. Three sentences carry you through to payment.

▶한국 미용실에는 팁 문화가 없습니다.

 Korean salons have no tipping culture.

표시된 금액을 그대로 결제하면 끝납니다. 팁을 건네면 오히려 당황하는 쪽은 직원입니다. 카드 결제는 거의 모든 매장에서 됩니다.
Pay the listed amount and you are done. Offer a tip and it is the staff who will be flustered. Card payment works at nearly every salon.

드라이까지 해 주세요는 굳이 말하지 않아도 되는 경우가 많습니다. 한국에서는 커트 값에 샴푸와 드라이 스타일링이 대체로 들어 있기 때문입니다. 추가 요금인 줄 알고 사양하면 이미 낸 값의 서비스를 놓치는 셈입니다.
You often do not need 드라이까지 해 주세요 at all, because a Korean haircut price usually includes the shampoo and the blow-dry. Declining it on the assumption of an extra charge means missing a service you already paid for.

 

 

5. 외국인이 특히 좋아하는 한국 미용실 문화
The Salon Customs Foreigners Talk About

 

한국 미용실이 해외에서 화제가 되는 이유는 기술 때문만이 아닙니다. 서비스 구성 자체가 다릅니다.
Korean salons are talked about abroad for more than their technique. The structure of the service itself is different.

▶샴푸와 드라이는 대개 커트 값에 들어 있습니다.

 The shampoo and the blow-dry are usually inside the cut price.

머리를 감겨 주는 동안 두피 지압을 함께 해 주는 매장이 많고, 물이 튀지 않도록 얼굴 위에 얇은 가리개를 덮어 줍니다. 처음 겪는 사람은 이 순간을 가장 인상 깊게 기억합니다.
Many salons work scalp acupressure into the wash and lay a thin cover over your face so water does not splash. First-timers tend to remember this moment above all.

한국에서는 머리를 자르는 곳이 두피를 관리하는 곳이기도 합니다. 두피 상태를 진단하고 여러 단계에 걸쳐 관리하는 프로그램이 있으며, 조용한 개별 공간을 따로 두는 매장도 있습니다. 커트나 펌과 묶어서 받는 사람이 많습니다.
In Korea the place that cuts your hair also looks after your scalp. There are programs that diagnose scalp condition and treat it over several stages, and some salons run separate quiet rooms. Many people book it together with a cut or a perm.

 

 

6. 펌이나 염색을 계획한다면
If You Are Planning a Perm or Color

 

커트만 받을 생각이 아니라면 선택지가 늘어납니다. 미리 알면 즉석에서 결정하느라 당황할 일이 없습니다.
If you are after more than a cut, the options multiply. Knowing them in advance spares you from deciding on the spot.

▶탈색을 동반한 염색이나 강한 펌이라면 클리닉을 받는 편이 낫습니다.

 For bleached color or a strong perm, taking the treatment is the better call.

펌과 염색은 약제를 쓰는 시술이라 모발 손상이 따릅니다. 그래서 시술 전후에 영양을 채워 넣는 클리닉을 함께 권하는 경우가 많습니다. 손상이 적은 시술이라면 굳이 하지 않아도 됩니다.
Perms and coloring use chemicals, so some damage comes with them. That is why salons often suggest adding a nourishing treatment before or after. For gentler services you can skip it.

다운펌은 옆머리나 뒷머리가 뜨는 것을 눌러 자연스럽게 붙이는 시술로, 한국 남성들이 커트와 함께 가장 많이 받는 항목입니다. 시간도 짧고 값도 크지 않아 한국식 단정한 인상을 원한다면 시도해 볼 만합니다.
The down perm presses down hair that sticks out at the sides or back, and it is the add-on Korean men most often pair with a cut. It is quick and inexpensive, so it is worth trying if you want that neat Korean look.

퍼스널 컬러 진단을 연계하는 매장도 늘고 있습니다. 피부 톤에 맞는 색을 먼저 찾고 그 범위 안에서 염색 색상을 고르는 방식입니다.
A growing number of salons tie in personal color analysis: find the shades that suit your skin tone first, then choose a hair color within that range.

 

 

7. 시간과 가격을 알고 가면 마음이 편합니다
Knowing the Time and the Cost Makes It Easy

 

일정을 잡을 때 가장 많이 하는 실수가 시간 계산입니다. 커트만 받는다면 짧게 끝나지만 펌이나 염색은 반나절이 사라진다고 보는 편이 맞습니다.
The most common mistake in planning is misjudging the time. A cut alone finishes quickly, but a perm or color will take half your day.

▶시작 전에 예상 금액을 물어보는 것이 가장 확실합니다.

 Asking for an estimate before they begin is the surest approach.

값은 매장과 지역, 디자이너 등급에 따라 차이가 큽니다. 위 금액은 일반적인 범위이며 강남이나 청담 지역의 유명 매장은 이보다 높습니다.
Prices vary widely by salon, district, and designer grade. The figures above are a general range; well-known salons in Gangnam or Cheongdam run higher.

미용업소는 요금표를 게시할 의무가 있으므로 매장 안에서 값을 확인할 수 있습니다. 시술이 여럿 묶이면 게시된 값과 달라지므로, 시작 전에 대략 얼마 나올까요를 한 번 물어 두시면 됩니다.
Salons are required to post a price list, so you can check inside the shop. Bundled services change the total, so ask 대략 얼마 나올까요 once before they begin.

 

미용실에서 오가는 말은 결국 일곱 장면으로 나뉩니다. 예약과 상담, 자르는 중, 계산, 서비스, 시술 선택, 시간과 가격입니다. 장면마다 한 문장씩만 붙잡아도 끝까지 굴러갑니다. 오늘 나온 문장 가운데 딱 세 개만 외우자면 이 사진처럼 해 주세요, 너무 짧지 않게 해 주세요, 지금 길이가 딱 좋아요입니다.
What gets said in a salon falls into seven scenes: the booking, the consultation, the cutting, the payment, the service, the add-ons, and the time and cost. Hold on to one sentence per scene and the whole visit keeps moving. If you memorize only three of today's lines, make them 이 사진처럼 해 주세요, 너무 짧지 않게 해 주세요, and 지금 길이가 딱 좋아요.
