1. Decide Where to Go First

Local clinic and university hospital in Korea referral letter

For a cold, an upset stomach, or muscle pain, go to a local clinic near your home. You can walk in without an appointment and simply register at the desk.

If you need surgery or detailed testing, you go to a university hospital such as Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center, or Seoul National University Hospital.

There is one order you must follow. To go to a university hospital, you first need a referral letter from a local clinic.

This is not optional. Without a referral, national health insurance does not apply and you pay the full cost yourself.

That is why you need these two lines. Let us start with the expressions used here.

Meaning and Use
The doctor is telling you to go to a university hospital
Use this to request a referral letter

When you hear "You should go to a bigger hospital," ask right away, "Please write me a referral." This single sentence can save you hundreds of thousands of won.

2. What You Hear in the Exam Room

Korean doctor asking symptoms in exam room

Consultations at Korean clinics often end quickly. That is not because the doctor is careless.

Korea has one of the highest numbers of doctor visits per person in the world, and its system is rated among the best globally in both access and treatment outcomes.

Of course, if the symptoms are complex the visit takes longer. The time depends on your condition.

Fast care comes with one condition. The patient must be able to state the symptoms briefly. Let us start with what you will hear.

듣는 말What You Hear 뜻과 쓰임Meaning and Use
Where does it bother you
Since when has it been like this
Is this your first visit
A polite way of asking your name

Instead of asking directly whether it hurts, Korean uses "Are you uncomfortable?" It is an idiomatic and gentle way to ask about pain.

The most important question is "Since when has it been like this?" A cough of three days and a cough of three weeks are different problems.

3. Sentences You Say in the Exam Room

Now come the sentences you say yourself. Practice them out loud, and type the same content into a translation app in advance.

말하는 문장What You Say 쓰는 상황When to Use
The basic pattern giving duration and body part
When you have two symptoms

To report a drug allergy

The structure is one pattern. Duration + buteo + body part + i apayo. By swapping the words, you can describe any symptom.

The particle after the body part is "i" when the word ends in a consonant and "ga" when it does not.

4. What You Get Is a Sheet of Paper, Not Medicine

Korean pharmacy counter prescription

Korea separates prescribing from dispensing. When the visit ends, what you hold is not medicine but a prescription.

You will not get lost. Most Korean pharmacies sit on the ground floor of the clinic building or right next door.

A prescription must be used within three days of issue, and if the last day falls on a weekend or holiday it is extended by one day.

5. What You Hear and Say at the Pharmacy

At the pharmacy, all you do is hand the prescription over the counter. Here is what you will hear next.

듣는 말What You Hear 뜻과 쓰임Meaning and Use
They are preparing your medicine
Take it 30 minutes after a meal
Take it three times a day
The medicine may make you drowsy

Both phrases are printed on the medicine packet, so learn to recognize them by sight as well.

Some medicines need no prescription. For over-the-counter items you only need to state the symptom.

말하는 문장What You Say 쓰는 상황When to Use
약 좀 주세요sohwaga an dwaeyo. yak jom juseyo 소화제를 찾을 때When you need a digestive aid
When you need a painkiller
To ask if it is available without a prescription

The structure is one pattern. The sentence you must say here is "My stomach feels heavy. Please give me some medicine."

6. Nights, Holidays, and Health Insurance

Household medicines at Korean convenience store at night

At 24-hour convenience stores you can buy 13 designated household medicines, including painkillers, cold medicine, digestive aids, and pain patches.

To find an open pharmacy, use the Holiday Pharmacy site or the E-Gen app. The surcharge at night and on holidays is a nationwide rule.

What decides your medical costs is health insurance. After six months of residence you are automatically enrolled, but there are many exceptions.

Employed workers, D-2 students, and D-4 language trainees are covered without waiting. Exact amounts and eligibility must be confirmed with the Service.

What you need when you fall ill in Korea is not fluent Korean. These three sentences see you through. Check them out loud in the vocabulary list below.
