Korean Clinic Phrases: What the Doctor Actually Asks (동네 병원과 약국에서 아픈 곳 말하기)
At a Korean local clinic the order of what you say matters, and the visit length depends on your condition.
You will learn the Korean for saying where it hurts, when it started, and getting medicine at a pharmacy.
한국의 동네 의원은 증상을 말하는 순서가 정해져 있고, 진료 시간은 상태에 따라 달라집니다.
아픈 곳과 언제부터 아팠는지를 말하고 약국에서 약을 받는 한국어를 익힙니다.

You can check the vocabulary list summarizing today's key words at the bottom of this post.
Key Expressions in This Lesson
진료실과 약국에서 오가는 말은 몇 마디로 정해져 있습니다. 아래 여섯 문장을 먼저 눈에 담고 본문으로 들어가십시오.
Only a few fixed lines go back and forth in the exam room and at the pharmacy. Take in these six sentences first, then move into the main text.
| 듣는 말 Listening |
하는 말 Speaking |
|---|---|
| 어디가 불편하세요? Where does it bother you? |
사흘 전부터 목이 아파요. My throat has hurt for three days. |
| 큰 병원 가보셔야겠어요. You should go to a bigger hospital. |
진료의뢰서 써 주세요. Please write me a referral letter. |
| 식후 30분에 드세요. Take it 30 minutes after a meal. |
소화가 안 돼요. 약 좀 주세요. My stomach feels heavy. Please give me some medicine. |
왼쪽 세 문장은 소단락 1과 2, 5에서, 오른쪽 세 문장은 소단락 1과 3, 5에서 나머지 문장과 함께 다룹니다.
The lines on the left are covered in Sections 1, 2, and 5, and those on the right in Sections 1, 3, and 5, together with the rest.
Decide Where to Go First

감기와 배탈, 근육통은 집 근처 의원으로 갑니다. 예약 없이 걸어 들어가 접수만 하면 됩니다. 대학병원은 동네 의원에서 진료의뢰서를 받아야 건강보험이 적용되므로, 이 두 마디가 진료비를 좌우합니다.
For a cold, an upset stomach, or muscle pain, walk into a local clinic and register at the desk. A university hospital applies your insurance only with a referral from that clinic, so these two lines decide what you pay.
| 한국어 Korean |
발음 Pronunciation |
뜻과 쓰임 Meaning and use |
|---|---|---|
| 큰 병원 가보셔야겠어요 You should go to a bigger hospital |
keun byeongwon gaboshyeoyagesseoyo | 대학병원으로 가라는 뜻입니다 The doctor is telling you to go to a university hospital |
| 진료의뢰서 써 주세요 Please write me a referral letter |
jillyouiroeseo sseo juseyo | 진료의뢰서를 요청하는 문장입니다 Use this to request a referral letter |
▶ 큰 병원 가보셔야겠어요가 나오면 곧바로 진료의뢰서 써 주세요라고 요청하십시오.
▶ When you hear the first line, answer with the second right away.
의뢰서 없이 대학병원에 가면 건강보험이 적용되지 않아 진료비를 전액 본인이 냅니다.
Without a referral, insurance does not apply at a university hospital and you pay the full cost yourself.
가보셔야겠어요는 명령이 아니라 권유의 어미입니다. 부드럽게 들리지만 실제로는 지금 옮기라는 뜻이므로 그 자리에서 의뢰서를 요청해야 합니다.
가보셔야겠어요 is a suggestion ending, not a command. It sounds soft, but it means move now, so ask for the referral on the spot.
What You Hear in the Exam Room

한국의 의원 진료는 짧게 끝나는 경우가 많습니다. 무성의해서가 아니라 환자가 증상을 짧게 정리해 말하는 것을 전제로 돌아가는 구조입니다. 그래서 먼저 들리는 말을 알아야 합니다.
Consultations at Korean clinics often end quickly, not out of carelessness but because the system assumes the patient states the symptoms briefly. So you first need to catch what is said to you.
| 듣는 말 What you hear |
발음 Pronunciation |
뜻과 쓰임 Meaning and use |
|---|---|---|
| 어디가 불편하세요 Where does it bother you |

▶ 가장 중요한 질문은 언제부터 그러셨어요입니다.
▶ The most important question is since when.
사흘 된 기침과 3주 된 기침은 다른 문제이기 때문입니다. 기간을 먼저 준비해 두면 진료가 빨라집니다.
A cough of three days and a cough of three weeks are different problems. Have the duration ready and the visit moves faster.
한국어에서는 아프냐고 직접 묻는 대신 불편하세요라고 묻습니다. 통증을 부드럽게 묻는 관용 표현이며, 직역해 불편하다는 뜻으로만 받으면 질문의 무게를 놓칩니다.
Instead of asking directly whether it hurts, Korean asks whether you are uncomfortable. Read it only as a literal word and you miss the weight of the question.
Sentences You Say in the Exam Room
이제 직접 입 밖으로 낼 문장입니다. 소리 내어 연습하고, 같은 내용을 번역 앱에 미리 입력해 화면에 띄워 두십시오.

By swapping the words, you can describe any symptom. Replace 사흘 with 이틀 or 일주일, and 목 with 배 or 머리.
부위 뒤에 오는 조사는 받침이 있으면 이, 없으면 가입니다. 목이 아파요, 머리가 아파요처럼 씁니다.
The particle after the body part is 이 when the word ends in a consonant and 가 when it does not, as in 목이 아파요 and 머리가 아파요.
What You Get Is a Sheet of Paper, Not Medicine

한국은 의사가 진단하고 약사가 약을 짓는 의약분업 구조입니다. 진료가 끝나면 손에 쥐는 것은 약이 아니라 처방전입니다.

It is extended by one day if the last day is a weekend or holiday. Some medicines carry a different period, so check the date printed on the sheet.
헤맬 일은 없습니다. 한국의 약국은 대부분 병원 건물 1층이나 바로 옆에 붙어 있어, 계단을 내려오면 약국 간판이 보입니다.
You will not get lost. Most Korean pharmacies sit on the ground floor of the clinic building or right next door.
What You Hear and Say at the Pharmacy

Thirteen convenience store items are designated but two are discontinued, so eleven are actually sold, and the government is moving to expand the list, so this may change. The dispensing surcharge at night and on holidays is a nationwide rule.
