Korean Spacing Rules: Where One Chunk Ends

by Hunmin Institute(훈민학당) 2026. 8. 16.

Korean Does Not Space Between Words. It Spaces Between Chunks (한국어는 단어마다 띄지 않고 덩어리마다 띕니다)

학교에 갑니다 is not three chunks. It is two.
This post shows where Korean puts a space and where it does not.

학교에 갑니다는 세 덩어리가 아니라 두 덩어리입니다.
한국어가 어디에서 띄고 어디에서 붙이는지 그 경계를 잡습니다.

1. 조사는 앞말에 붙어 한 덩어리가 됩니다
Particles Join the Word Before Them

영어는 단어마다 띄어 씁니다. I go to school은 네 덩어리입니다. 한국어는 다릅니다. 학교에 갑니다는 두 덩어리입니다. 영어의 to에 해당하는 에가 앞말에 달라붙어 학교에가 통째로 한 마디가 되기 때문입니다.
English spaces between words: I go to school is four chunks. Korean does not. 학교에 갑니다 is two, because the 에 that answers to "to" attaches to the word before it and 학교에 becomes a single unit.

이것을 정한 것이 한글 맞춤법 제41항입니다. 조사는 앞말에 붙여 쓴다는 한 문장입니다. 은, 는, 이, 가, 을, 를, 에, 에서, 하고, 부터, 까지가 모두 여기에 해당합니다. 학교 에 갑니다라고 띄어 놓으면 한국인의 눈은 그 자리에서 한 번 걸립니다.
This is Article 41 of the Korean orthography rules, a single line: particles are written joined to the preceding word. Write 학교 에 갑니다 with a space and a Korean reader's eye snags there.

▶ 명사에 조사를 붙이면 그대로 한 마디가 됩니다.

▶ A noun plus a particle makes one chunk.

틀은 [명사] + [조사]입니다. 학교에, 집에서, 친구하고, 저는처럼 씁니다. 조사가 두 개 겹쳐도 마찬가지입니다. 집에서만, 학교에도처럼 이어 붙습니다. 조사는 혼자 서지 못하고 언제나 앞말에 얹혀 가는 말이라고 보면 됩니다.
The pattern is [noun] + [particle]. Two particles in a row behave the same way, as in 집에서만 and 학교에도. A particle never stands alone; it always rides on the word before it.

2. 의존명사는 혼자 못 서지만 앞말과는 떨어집니다
Bound Nouns Cannot Stand Alone, Yet They Take a Space

수, 것, 데, 때문 같은 말은 혼자 쓰이지 못합니다. 수만 놓고는 문장이 되지 않고 반드시 앞에 무엇인가가 와야 합니다. 그런데 이 말들은 조사와 달리 앞말과 떨어져 있습니다. 한글 맞춤법 제42항이 의존명사는 띄어 쓴다고 정하고 있습니다.
Words like 수, 것, 데 and 때문 cannot be used on their own. Yet unlike particles, these take a space. Article 42 states that bound nouns are written separately.

혼자 못 서는 것은 조사와 같은데 붙는지 떨어지는지는 반대입니다. 이 지점이 외국인 학습자가 가장 많이 흔들리는 자리입니다. 할수 있어요라고 붙여 쓰면 눈이 걸리고, 할 수 있어요라고 띄어야 자연스럽게 읽힙니다.
They share the inability to stand alone but behave in the opposite way on spacing, and this is where learners waver most. 할수 있어요 snags the eye; 할 수 있어요 reads smoothly.

▶ 동사 어간에 을 수 있어요를 붙이면 가능을 말하는 문장이 됩니다.

▶ Attach 을 수 있어요 to a verb stem and you state what you can do.

틀은 [동사 어간] + 을 수 있어요입니다. 할 수 있어요, 갈 수 있어요, 먹을 수 있어요처럼 씁니다. 의존명사 뒤에는 조사가 다시 붙습니다. 볼 데가에서 데는 앞말과 떨어지고 가는 데에 붙습니다. 한 마디 안에서 두 규칙이 동시에 작동하는 셈입니다.
The pattern is [verb stem] + 을 수 있어요. A particle can then attach to the bound noun: in 볼 데가, the 데 stands apart from 볼 while the 가 joins it. Both rules operate inside a single chunk.

3. 앞을 보면 붙는지 떨어지는지 알 수 있습니다
Look at What Comes Before

문제는 같은 글자가 양쪽에 다 나온다는 것입니다. 만큼, 대로, 뿐이 그렇습니다. 나만큼은 붙여 쓰고 할 만큼은 띄어 씁니다. 글자만 보면 구분할 방법이 없습니다.
The trouble is that the same syllable appears on both sides. 나만큼 is joined and 할 만큼 is separated, and the syllable alone tells you nothing.

기준은 앞에 있습니다. 앞이 명사면 조사라서 붙고, 앞이 동사나 형용사의 관형형이면 의존명사라서 떨어집니다. 나만큼의 나는 명사이고, 할 만큼의 할은 하다에서 온 관형형입니다. 이 한 가지만 잡으면 세 글자가 한꺼번에 정리됩니다.
The test lies in front. If a noun comes before it, it is a particle and joins; if a verb or adjective in its modifying form comes before it, it is a bound noun and separates. Hold on to this one test and all three sort themselves out.

Let us go by the law.
아는 대로 말하세요.
Tell me what you know.
너뿐이에요.
There is only you.
웃을 뿐이었어요.
I could only laugh.

▶ 관형형 뒤에 대로를 붙이면 그대로 방식을 말하는 마디가 됩니다.

▶ A modifying form plus 대로 states the manner.

틀은 [관형형] + 대로입니다. 아는 대로, 본 대로, 들은 대로처럼 씁니다. 숫자 편에서도 같은 글자가 자리에 따라 갈리는 장면을 보셨습니다. 그때는 어느 수사 체계를 쓸지가 갈렸고, 여기서는 붙일지 뗄지가 갈립니다. 다루는 내용은 다르지만 글자만 보지 말고 그 자리에서 무슨 일을 하는지 보라는 원리는 같습니다.
The pattern is [modifying form] + 대로. The number posts showed the same syllable splitting by position. The content differs, but the principle is the same: look at what the word is doing, not at the letters.

번역기가 놓치는 자리
What Translators Miss

A single space can flip the meaning. 한번 가 보세요 invites you to give it a try; 한 번 갔어요 counts one visit. 못 하다 means being unable to do something, while 못하다 means being poor at it. 큰 집 is a large house; 큰집 is a relative's main household. Translators catch these only when the surrounding context is generous. In short sentences they often produce the opposite. For a reader, refusing to skim past a single space raises accuracy sharply.

4. 어느 쪽이어도 뜻이 같은 자리가 있습니다
Some Spots Mean the Same Either Way

지금까지는 붙느냐 떨어지느냐가 정해져 있었습니다. 그런데 화면에서 두 가지가 다 보이는 자리도 있습니다. 규칙이 흔들리는 것이 아니라 양쪽을 모두 허용하기 때문입니다. 읽는 쪽에서는 어느 형태를 만나도 같은 뜻으로 받아들이면 됩니다.
So far the choice has been fixed. But some spots turn up both ways on screen. The rule is not wavering; both forms are permitted. As a reader, take either one to mean the same thing.

도와 드리다와 도와드리다가 그렇고, 한 개와 1개가 그렇습니다. 좀 더 큰 것과 좀더 큰것도 둘 다 성립합니다. 각각 한글 맞춤법 제47항, 제43항, 제46항이 허용하는 범위입니다.
도와 드리다 and 도와드리다 are one such pair, 한 개 and 1개 another, and 좀 더 큰 것 and 좀더 큰것 a third. These fall under Articles 47, 43 and 46 respectively.

▶ 동사에 아 주세요나 어 주세요를 붙이면 부탁하는 문장이 됩니다.

▶ Attach 아 주세요 or 어 주세요 to a verb and you have a request.

The pattern is [verb] + 아 주세요 or 어 주세요. Article 44 governs numbers written out in Hangul: they are spaced by units of 만. Part 1 of the number posts showed that Korean gives a new place name every four digits, and the spacing follows exactly that grid.

Reading Korean is not counting words but finding chunks. Particles join the word before them; bound nouns cannot stand alone yet still take a space. When the two blur, look at what comes before. Go through the vocabulary list below and picture the scenes you just read.

자주 묻는 질문
Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. 띄어쓰기를 틀리면 못 알아듣나요?

Q1. Will I be misunderstood if my spacing is wrong?

A1. 대부분은 알아듣습니다. 다만 큰 집과 큰집처럼 뜻이 갈리는 자리에서는 오해가 생깁니다.
A1. Usually not. But in pairs like 큰 집 and 큰집, where the meaning splits, misunderstanding does happen.

Q2. 조사인지 의존명사인지 빨리 구분하는 방법이 있나요?

Q2. Is there a quick way to tell a particle from a bound noun?

A2. 앞을 보세요. 앞이 명사면 붙는 조사이고, 앞이 관형형이면 떨어지는 의존명사입니다.
A2. Look at what comes before. A noun means a particle that joins; a modifying form means a bound noun that separates.

Q3. 인터넷 글은 왜 띄어쓰기가 제각각인가요?

Q3. Why is spacing so inconsistent online?

A3. 허용 범위가 넓은 자리가 있고, 빠르게 쓰다 보니 생략되는 경우도 많습니다. 읽을 때는 덩어리로 묶어 보면 대부분 해결됩니다.
A3. Some spots allow both forms, and fast typing drops spaces. When reading, grouping by chunk resolves most of it.

Q4. 도와드리다와 도와 드리다 중 무엇이 맞나요?

Q4. Which is correct, 도와드리다 or 도와 드리다?

A4. 둘 다 됩니다. 보조용언은 띄어 쓰는 것이 원칙이고 붙여 쓰는 것도 허용됩니다.
A4. Both work. Auxiliary verbs are separated by rule, and joining is also permitted.

Q5. 할 수 있어요를 할수있어요라고 쓴 글은 왜 있나요?

Q5. Why do some texts write 할수있어요 with no spaces?

A5. 빠르게 입력하면서 생략된 것이며 규범은 아닙니다. 읽을 때는 할과 수 사이를 스스로 끊어 주면 뜻이 그대로 들어옵니다.
A5. It is a typing shortcut, not the standard. When reading, insert the break between 할 and 수 yourself and the meaning comes through unchanged.

TOPIK Preview Answer

정답 ② 한국어를 읽을 때는 덩어리를 찾아야 합니다.
Answer: ②

마지막 문장이 글 전체의 결론입니다. ①은 띄어쓰기가 없다는 말이 지문에 없고, ③은 조사가 앞말에 붙는다는 지문과 반대이며, ④는 두 덩어리라고 한 지문과 어긋납니다.
The final sentence states the conclusion. ① is never claimed, ③ contradicts the statement that particles join, and ④ contradicts the count of two chunks.
