TOPIK Is a Scoring System, Not Just a Test

TOPIK does not measure ability; it asks whether you cleared a score band.
Here you learn the scoring structure and the Korean used at the test center.

TOPIK Is Not One Test but Three

Three different tests sit under the name TOPIK. TOPIK I is the beginner test, with listening and reading, determining levels 1 and 2. TOPIK II is the intermediate to advanced test, with listening, writing, and reading, determining levels 3 through 6. The speaking test is separate, registered for and taken on its own.

ROM jeopsu gigani eonjekkajiyeyo/sincheong gigani eonjekkajiyeyo
EN When does registration close?/When does the application period close?

접수 and 응시 are a pair.

접수 is submitting your application; 응시 is sitting the exam. Registration periods and eligibility are different items, so read the two words separately in a notice.

What to ask splits here too. For dates, ask 접수 기간이 언제까지예요; for eligibility, ask 응시 자격이 어떻게 돼요.

Decide the Level You Need First

The first thing to settle is your target level; starting without knowing which level you need leaves you without direction. Required levels differ by university, company, and institution, so the table below is a general guide.

You sit the test, and your level is set automatically by which band your total falls into. All you choose is TOPIK I or TOPIK II. Level 2 or below means TOPIK I; level 3 or above means TOPIK II, and no matter how well you do on TOPIK I, level 3 will not come out of it.

Look at Where the Points Are Concentrated

Level is decided by the total alone, with no minimum for any single section. That makes the distribution of points the thing that sets your strategy. Start with the cutoff for each level.

Skip writing and you can reach level 5, but never level 6.

Abandon writing entirely and score full marks in listening and reading, and you have 200. That clears the level 5 line of 190 but falls short of level 6 at 230. Realistically, full marks are out of reach: eighty percent across those two gives 160, which passes level 4 at 150 but leaves you thirty short of level 5.

The conclusion: if level 4 is your goal, putting your weight on listening and reading is enough; for level 5 or above, writing is not optional.

Your Target Level Sets the Order of Study

Now turn that target level into a timetable. Preparing for the same test, what you give up differs by goal.

Same test, different goals, different things to give up.

A learner aiming for level 3 loses by spending time on the essay in 54. For level 6, precision in vocabulary and grammar decides the final points.

Listening Is a Test You Read First

The most common mistake in listening is clinging to the sound alone. You have the question paper in front of you and time to read the choices before the audio begins, and whether you use it changes your accuracy.

[wae an deullyeosseulkkayo]
Why could I not hear it?

The reason is usually one of three.

An unknown word, an unfamiliar sound change, or speed you could not follow. Each has a different remedy, so identify the cause first. The pronunciation rules from Part 3 do their work right here.

Reading the choices first means you listen knowing what to listen for. Listening unprepared, you try to understand everything and miss the point.

In Reading, Timing Is Everything

Reading gives you seventy minutes for fifty questions, a little over one minute and twenty seconds each. The passages grow longer toward the end, so working straight through leaves you short of time on exactly the questions that carry more points.

[siganeul jaego pulkkayo]

Know your own pace before test day.

You can clear the short early questions quickly and pour the remaining time into the back, or start from the back, handle the long passages with room to breathe, then return to the front. Either way, time yourself on one past paper and the right order for you will emerge.

Writing Has Four Questions and Four Demands

Writing is graded by a human being.

Legible handwriting and correct use of the manuscript grid affect your score more than you would think. Good content that cannot be read loses points all the same.

Writing is the hardest section to practise alone, because catching your own mistakes is difficult. That is why starting with the fixed patterns of 51 and 52 raises your score fastest.

In the final month, you learn nothing new.

You only train yourself to produce what you already know in the format the test demands. This holds no matter how much time is left. Instead of opening a new book, work past papers against the clock and revisit only what you got wrong.

The Speaking Test Is a Separate Exam

The speaking test was first administered in November 2022 as a separate exam. It is not taken with the written test and must be registered for on its own. In 2026 it is held three times.

One thing to check before registering: as of 2026, its results are not counted in the residence visa points system, where only the written level is accepted as a language score. If a visa is your purpose, the written level comes first. The system can change, so confirm the official notice before registering.

Three cases call for it: proving conversational ability in a hiring process, being asked for it in graduate admissions, and wanting an objective measure of your speaking. Outside those three, the fee and the hours are better spent on the written test.

Registration is handled on the official website. Domestic sittings sometimes split registration days by region with a fixed closing time, and popular centers fill almost as soon as they open. The method differs by sitting, so check your region’s date and closing time in the notice first.

펜 놓으세요 is not a request but an instruction.

It is a short imperative without 주세요, so it can sound blunt the first time. At a test center the invigilator reads a fixed script, so nothing personal is meant by it. Writing on after hearing it counts as misconduct.

TOPIK does not measure ability; it asks whether you cleared a fixed score band. Level comes from the total alone, no section has a minimum, and one writing question outweighs twelve listening ones. So the order is single: decide the level you need, check its cutoff, and start where the points are concentrated. The Korean spoken on notices and at the center is fixed too, so learning it leaves nothing to catch you out on the day.

Type: TOPIK II Reading [32–34], expository text, choose the matching statement

Read the passage and choose the statement that does not match.

TOPIK II is scored out of 300. Listening and reading each have fifty questions worth 100 points. Writing has four questions worth 100 points, so one writing question is worth 25.

Answer ▾

Answer: ④ Writing has fifty questions.

The passage says writing has four questions, so ④ contradicts it. ①, ②, and ③ repeat the first, second, and last sentences as given, so all three match. The item type modeled here is TOPIK II Reading [32–34], worth 2 points.

FAQ

Q1. Answer ▾
Q1. Do I register for a specific level?

A1. No. You only choose between TOPIK I and TOPIK II, and your level is set automatically by which band your total falls into. No matter how well you do on TOPIK I, level 3 will not come out of it, so decide your target level first and pick the test from there.

Q2. Answer ▾
Q2. Is there a minimum score for each section?

A2. There is none. Level is decided by the total alone. A low writing score can still clear the cutoff if listening and reading are strong. Level 6, though, is hard to reach without writing.

Q3. Answer ▾
Q3. Do I have to take the speaking test?

A3. It is a separate exam with its own registration. Unless you need to prove conversational ability, finish the written level first. The system can change, so check the official notice before registering.

Q4. Answer ▾
Q4. Where do I check fees and dates?

A4. 공식 홈페이지 topik.go.kr입니다.
A4. On the official site, topik.go.kr. Dates, fees, and formats are adjusted each year, and domestic sittings sometimes split registration by region with a fixed closing time. Popular centers fill almost as soon as they open, so check your region’s date first.

Q5. Answer ▾
Q5. How long is a score valid?

A5. Two years from the announcement date. Only scores within that window are accepted for study or visa documents, so count backward from your submission deadline when choosing a sitting.
