How to Read Hangul Part 4: Reading Practice (외국인 한글 공부 4부, 한글 읽기 실전 연습)
Reading Hangul differs from knowing the letters, and speed comes from practice.
This post trains reading aloud: the syllable chart, idol names, titles, and short sentences.
한글 읽기는 글자를 아는 것과 다르며 속도는 훈련량에서 나옵니다.
조합표와 이름, 제목, 짧은 문장까지 소리 내어 읽는 훈련을 익힙니다.

You can check the vocabulary list summarizing today's key words at the bottom of this post.

조합표는 소단락 1에서, 이름과 제목은 소단락 2와 3에서, 문장 읽기는 소단락 4에서 다룹니다.The chart comes in Section 1, names and titles in Sections 2 and 3, and sentence reading in Section 4.
1. 자모 조합표 읽기Reading the Syllable Chart

읽기 속도를 만드는 가장 확실한 도구는 자모 조합표입니다. 자음 열넷을 세로에, 모음 열을 가로에 놓으면 받침 없는 음절이 모두 정리됩니다.The surest tool for reading speed is the syllable chart. Fourteen consonants down, ten vowels across, and every syllable without a batchim is laid out.

▶ 눈으로 훑지 말고 반드시 소리 내어 읽으십시오.▶ Do not scan it with your eyes. Read it aloud.
가로로 읽으면 가나다라마바사, 세로로 읽으면 가거고구그기가 됩니다. 두 방향을 번갈아 읽으면 자음과 모음이 각각 따로 정리됩니다.Read across for 가나다라마바사, read down for 가거고구그기. Alternating the two directions sorts the consonants and the vowels separately.
하루 한 번, 처음부터 끝까지 막힘없이 읽는 시간을 재 보십시오. 처음 3분 걸리던 표가 일주일 뒤에는 1분 안에 끝납니다. 오늘 바로 읽히는 글자에 표시해 두면 진도가 눈에 보입니다.Time yourself once a day reading it through without stumbling. What takes three minutes at first drops under one within a week. Mark the characters you can already read and your progress becomes visible.
2. 이름으로 분해와 조립 연습하기Breaking Apart and Reassembling Names

조합표가 읽히면 곧바로 실제 낱말로 넘어갑니다. 가장 좋은 재료는 이미 소리를 알고 있는 이름입니다.Once the chart reads smoothly, move to real words. The best material is names whose sound you already know.
| 이름 Name |
전체 발음 Full pronunciation |
이렇게 분해합니다 Split it like this |
| 방탄소년단 Bangtan Sonyeondan |
bang-tan-so-nyeon-dan | 방 = ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅇb + a + ng년 = ㄴ + ㅕ + ㄴn + yeo + n |
| 블랙핑크 Blackpink |
beul-laek-ping-keu | 랙 = ㄹ + ㅐ + ㄱr + ae + k핑 = ㅍ + ㅣ + ㅇp + i + ng |
| 뉴진스 NewJeans |
nyu-jin-seu | 뉴 = ㄴ + ㅠn + yu진 = ㅈ + ㅣ + ㄴj + i + n |
| 세븐틴 Seventeen |
se-beun-tin | 븐 = ㅂ + ㅡ + ㄴb + eu + n틴 = ㅌ + ㅣ + ㄴt + i + n |
| 에스파 aespa |
e-seu-pa | 스 = ㅅ + ㅡs + eu파 = ㅍ + ㅏp + a |
▶ 이미 발음을 아는 이름이라 스스로 채점이 됩니다.▶ Because you already know the sound, you can grade yourself.
방법은 분해와 조립입니다. 한 글자를 초성과 중성, 종성으로 나눈 뒤 다시 합쳐 소리 내어 읽습니다. 정답을 아는 상태에서 하는 연습이라 교정이 빠릅니다.The method is to break apart and reassemble: split a character into initial, medial, and final, then put it back and read aloud. Correction comes fast when you already know the answer.
받침이 붙은 글자가 어렵게 느껴지면 초성과 중성까지만 먼저 읽고 마지막에 종성을 얹으십시오. 방을 바에서 멈춘 뒤 ㅇ을 붙이는 식입니다.If a character with a final feels hard, read only the initial and medial first, then add the final. Stop at 바 and put ㅇ on top to make 방.
3. 제목으로 호흡 늘리기Building Breath with Titles

이름 다음은 제목입니다. 글자 수가 늘어나면서 읽는 호흡이 자연스럽게 길어집니다.After names come titles. As the characters multiply, your reading breath lengthens on its own.
| 제목 Title |

▶ 외래어 표기를 함께 익히는 것이 또 하나의 이득입니다.▶ A second gain is learning how foreign words are written in Hangul.
영어를 한글로 옮긴 제목은 한국어 콘텐츠 곳곳에 나옵니다. 다이너마이트처럼 한 음절이 두세 글자로 늘어나는 규칙에 익숙해지면 처음 보는 외래어도 읽힙니다.Titles carried from English into Hangul appear everywhere in Korean content. Get used to one English syllable stretching into two or three characters, as in 다이너마이트, and new loanwords open up.
틀렸다고 느껴지는 글자만 모아 조합표로 돌아가 확인하십시오. 전부 다시 읽는 것보다 막힌 자리만 짚는 편이 훨씬 빠릅니다.Collect only the characters that felt wrong and check them back on the chart. Pointing at the spots where you stalled beats reading the whole thing again.
4. 짧은 문장으로 마무리하기Finishing with Short Sentences

마지막 단계는 문장입니다. 목표는 분명합니다. 음절마다 멈추지 않고 낱말 단위로 넘어가는 것입니다.The last stage is sentences, and the goal is clear: stop pausing at every syllable and move word by word.

▶ 낱말과 낱말 사이에서만 숨을 쉬고 글자 사이에서는 멈추지 않습니다.▶ Breathe only between words, never between characters.
초보자는 안녕하세요를 안, 녕, 하, 세, 요 다섯 번에 나눠 읽습니다. 훈련이 쌓이면 한 덩어리로 읽습니다. 이 차이가 읽기 속도를 결정합니다.A beginner reads 안녕하세요 in five pieces. With practice it becomes one chunk, and that difference is your reading speed.
좋아하는 가사 한 소절이나 자막 한 문장을 골라 같은 문장을 열 번만 반복하면 흐름이 잡힙니다. 오늘 나온 어휘는 아래 단어장에서 정리하고 가시기 바랍니다.Take one line of lyrics or one subtitle and repeat it ten times; the rhythm settles. Gather today's words in the vocabulary list below.
완주를 축하드립니다You Have Finished the Course
여기까지 오셨다면 1부부터 4부까지 한글 읽기 과정을 모두 마치신 것입니다. 이제 처음 보는 글자도 스스로 읽어 내실 수 있습니다.If you have come this far, you have completed the reading course from Part 1 to Part 4. You can now read characters you have never seen.
언어는 쌓여 가는 것입니다. 부족하게 느껴져도 기초는 이미 단단해졌습니다. 네 편을 반복해 보시고, 다음은 문장이 놓이는 순서입니다.A language builds over time. Even if it feels short, the foundation is solid. Review the four parts, and next comes the order sentences fall into.

FAQ
Q1. 조합표는 하루에 몇 번 읽어야 하나요How many times a day should I read the chart?
하루 한 번, 처음부터 끝까지 막힘없이 읽는 것을 목표로 하십시오. 횟수보다 매일 빠뜨리지 않는 것이 중요합니다.Once a day, straight through without stumbling. Daily matters more than often.
Q2. 받침이 있는 글자는 어떻게 연습하나요How do I practice characters with a batchim?
조합표는 받침 없는 음절만 다룹니다. 받침은 이름과 제목 연습에서 반복되므로 3부 규칙을 떠올리며 소리 내어 읽으십시오.The chart covers syllables without batchim. Finals recur in the name and title drills, so recall the Part 3 rules and read aloud.
Q3. 읽기는 되는데 뜻을 모르겠습니다I can read but I do not understand.
지금 단계의 목표는 뜻이 아니라 소리입니다. 읽는 속도가 안정되면 뜻은 회화와 콘텐츠에서 빠르게 붙습니다.At this stage the goal is sound, not meaning. Once speed settles, meaning follows quickly.
