1. 받침은 음절 아래에 한 칸 더 붙습니다
Batchim Adds One More Slot Below the Syllable

1부에서 자음과 모음을 붙여 글자를 만들었습니다. 받침은 그 글자 아래에 자음을 하나 더 놓는 자리입니다. 초성에 쓰던 자음이 그대로 이 자리에도 옵니다.
In Part 1 you joined a consonant and a vowel into a syllable. Batchim is a slot that puts one more consonant below that syllable. The same consonants you used as initials come here too.

▶받침 하나가 붙고 안 붙고에 따라 전혀 다른 말이 됩니다.
One batchim turns a syllable into an entirely different word.
가와 강, 마와 밤, 지와 진은 앞의 소리가 같습니다. 아래에 자음 하나가 더 붙었을 뿐인데 뜻이 완전히 갈립니다. 그래서 받침을 흘려 읽으면 다른 낱말로 들립니다.

2. 받침 자리에서 나는 소리는 일곱뿐입니다
Only Seven Sounds Come Out of the Batchim Slot

받침 자리에 올 수 있는 자음은 많지만 실제로 귀에 들리는 소리는 일곱 개뿐입니다. 여러 자음이 이 자리에서는 같은 소리로 합쳐지기 때문입니다.
Many consonants can sit in the batchim slot, but only seven sounds actually reach the ear. Several consonants merge into one sound in that position.

▶글자가 달라도 받침에서는 같은 소리로 닫힙니다.
Different letters close with the same sound in the batchim slot.
옷과 낮, 꽃, 밭, 빛은 받침 자리의 자음이 저마다 다르지만 끝소리는 모두 t 하나입니다. 적는 글자와 나는 소리를 갈라 두어야 하며, 적을 때는 본디 자음을 그대로 쓰고 읽을 때만 일곱 소리로 닫습니다.
옷, 낮, 꽃, 밭, and 빛 carry different consonants in the slot, yet they all end with the same t sound. Keep the written letter and the spoken sound apart: write the original consonant, and close it into one of the seven sounds only when you read.
일곱 개만 잡으면 처음 보는 받침을 만나도 소리를 짐작할 수 있습니다. 표를 외우려 들지 말고 예시 낱말을 소리 내어 읽으십시오. 같은 소리로 닫히는 낱말을 몇 번 읽고 나면 자음이 저절로 묶입니다.
Hold these seven and you can guess the sound of any batchim you have never seen. Do not try to memorize the table; read the example words aloud. After a few passes through words that close alike, the consonants group themselves.
3. 겹받침과 이중모음은 하나로 줄여 읽습니다
Double Batchim and Diphthongs Reduce to One

받침 자리에 자음이 둘 겹치는 낱말이 있습니다. 이때는 둘 다 소리 나지 않고 하나만 발음됩니다.
Some words carry two consonants overlapping in the batchim slot. In that case only one of the two is pronounced.

예시 Example |
|---|---|---|
| ㄳ | k | 몫 / 삯 / 넋 [mok] / [sak] / [neok] share / wages / soul |
| ㄵ | n | 앉다 / 얹다 / 끼얹다 [anda] / [eonda] / [kkieonda] to sit / to place on / to pour over |
| ㄺ | k | 닭 / 맑다 / 읽다 / 밝다 [dak] / [makda] / [ikda] / [bakda] chicken / to be clear / to read / to be bright |
| ㄼ | l | 여덟 / 넓다 / 짧다 [yeodeol] / [neolda] / [jjalda] eight / to be wide / to be short |
| ㄾ | l | 핥다 / 훑다 [halda] / [hulda] to lick / to skim |
| ㅄ | p | 값 / 없다 / 가엾다 [gap] / [eopda] / [gayeopda] price / to not have / to be pitiful |
모음 두 개가 붙어 한 소리를 이루는 이중모음도 함께 봅니다. 두 모음을 빠르게 이어 읽으면 그 소리가 그대로 나옵니다.
Diphthongs, two vowels joined into one sound, come next. Read the two vowels quickly together and the sound appears on its own.

겹받침은 어떻게 읽어요? [gyeopbatchimeun eotteoke ilgeoyo] How do I read a double batchim? |
▶둘 중 하나만 소리 난다는 원칙 하나만 잡으면 됩니다.
Hold one rule: only one of the two is pronounced.
닭은 닥으로, 없다는 업다로 닫힙니다. 어느 쪽이 살아남는지는 낱말마다 다르므로 표를 통째로 외우는 대신 자주 쓰는 낱말로 익히십시오. 닭과 값, 없다 셋만 입에 붙어도 나머지가 따라옵니다.
닭 closes as 닥 and 없다 as 업다. Which of the two survives differs by word, so instead of memorizing the whole table, learn through the words you meet often. Get 닭, 값, and 없다 into your mouth and the rest follows.
이중모음 가운데 ㅢ만 자리에 따라 소리가 갈립니다. 의사에서는 의로, 회의에서는 이로 납니다. 이 갈림은 3부 발음 규칙에서 다시 다루므로 지금은 두 모음을 이어 읽는 연습만 하시면 됩니다.
Among the diphthongs only ㅢ shifts by position: 의 in 의사 and 이 in 회의. Part 3 returns to that shift, so for now just practise running the two vowels together.
4. 받침이 든 낱말을 이어서 읽습니다
Reading Whole Words That Carry Batchim
이제 글자를 낱말로 이어 읽습니다. 아래 다섯 낱말을 소리 내어 읽어 보십시오.
Now connect the syllables into words. Read the five words below aloud.

▶여기까지 오면 받침이 든 낱말까지 스스로 조합해 읽을 수 있습니다.
At this point you can assemble and read words carrying batchim on your own.
한 글자씩 끊어 읽어도 뜻은 통합니다. 다만 붙여서 빠르게 읽으면 앞 글자의 받침이 뒤 글자로 넘어가 소리가 달라지는 자리가 나옵니다. 한국말을 그대로 읽으면 한국말이지만 실제로는 한궁말에 가깝게 들리는 것이 그 때문입니다.
Reading one syllable at a time still gets the meaning across. But read them joined and fast, and the batchim of one syllable carries into the next, changing the sound. That is why 한국말 read letter by letter is 한국말, yet what you actually hear is closer to 한궁말.
받침은 음절 아래에 놓여 소리를 닫는 자음입니다. 적는 자음은 여럿이지만 나는 소리는 일곱이고, 둘이 겹쳐도 하나만 소리 납니다. 이 셋만 잡으면 받침이 든 낱말은 스스로 읽힙니다. 남은 것은 낱말을 이어 읽을 때 소리가 넘어가고 바뀌는 자리이며 그것이 3부입니다.
Batchim is the consonant placed under a syllable to close its sound. Many consonants are written there, only seven sounds come out, and when two overlap only one is pronounced. Hold those three and words with batchim open up on their own. What remains is how sounds carry over and change when words are read together, and that is Part 3.

Choose the statement that matches the following passage.
받침 자리에는 여러 자음이 옵니다. 그런데 실제로 나는 소리는 일곱 개뿐입니다. 옷과 꽃과 밭은 받침이 서로 다르지만 끝소리는 모두 같습니다.
Many consonants come into the batchim slot. Yet only seven sounds actually come out. 옷, 꽃, and 밭 carry different batchim, but they all end with the same sound.
① 받침 자리에서 나는 소리는 자음의 수만큼입니다.
② 받침 자리에 올 수 있는 자음은 일곱 개입니다.
③ 받침이 달라도 끝소리가 같은 낱말이 있습니다.
④ 옷과 꽃은 받침을 쓰지 않습니다.
Answer ▾
정답 ③ 받침이 달라도 끝소리가 같은 낱말이 있습니다.
Answer: ③ Some words end with the same sound despite different batchim.
The passage says 옷, 꽃, and 밭 carry different batchim yet end alike, so ③ is correct. ① turns the number of consonants that may appear into the number of sounds, which contradicts the passage. ② picks up the number seven from the passage but attaches it to the wrong thing, so it is only partly right. ④ sounds plausible yet the passage never says batchim goes unwritten. The item type modeled here is TOPIK I Reading [43–45], worth 3 points.
FAQ
Q1. 받침을 빼고 말하면 못 알아듣나요?Answer ▾
Q1. Will I be misunderstood if I drop the batchim?
A1. 뜻이 갈리는 경우가 많습니다. 가와 강, 마와 밤은 받침 하나로 다른 낱말이 됩니다. 끝소리를 끝까지 닫아 주십시오. 처음에는 과장되게 닫아도 좋습니다. 흘려 읽는 습관이 굳는 편이 훨씬 고치기 어렵습니다.
A1. Often the meaning changes. 가 and 강, 마 and 밤 differ by a single batchim. Close the final sound all the way. Overdoing it at first is fine; a habit of slurring is far harder to undo later.
Q2. 겹받침을 다 외워야 하나요?Answer ▾
Q2. Do I have to memorize every double batchim?
A2. 전부 외우기보다 둘 중 하나만 소리 난다는 원칙을 먼저 잡으십시오. 그다음 닭, 값, 없다, 앉다처럼 자주 쓰는 낱말로 반복하면 나머지는 그 낱말에 기대어 붙습니다.
A2. Hold the rule that only one of the two is pronounced before memorizing anything. Then repeat common words like 닭, 값, 없다, and 앉다, and the rest attach themselves to those.
Q3. 적는 글자와 나는 소리가 다르면 쓸 때는 어느 쪽으로 쓰나요?Answer ▾
Q3. When the letter and the sound differ, which one do I write?
A3. 적을 때는 본디 자음을 그대로 씁니다. 옷은 옫이 아니라 옷으로 적습니다. 소리 나는 대로 적으면 낱말의 뿌리가 보이지 않아 뜻을 찾기 어려워지기 때문입니다.
A3. Write the original consonant. 옷 is written 옷, not 옫. Spelling by sound would hide the root of the word and make its meaning hard to trace.
Q4. 받침 소리 일곱 개를 다 외워야 하나요?Answer ▾
Q4. Do I need to memorize all seven batchim sounds?
A4. 표를 보며 예시 낱말을 소리 내어 읽다 보면 저절로 익습니다. 외우기보다 읽어 보는 쪽이 빠르며, 헷갈리는 낱말은 국립국어원 한국어기초사전에서 표준 발음을 확인할 수 있습니다.
A4. Reading the example words aloud while looking at the table settles them in. Reading beats memorizing here, and for words you keep confusing, the Korean Basic Dictionary of the National Institute of Korean Language gives the standard pronunciation.
