Nami Island is the closest major destination to Seoul, with several ways to get there.
This post teaches the car-free day and the Korean for ticket windows, taxis, and ferries.

역 창구와 택시, 선착장에서 오가는 말은 몇 마디로 정해져 있습니다. 아래 여섯 문장을 먼저 눈에 담고 본문으로 들어가십시오.
Only a few lines go back and forth at the counter, in the taxi, and at the dock. Take in these six sentences first, then move into the main text.

1. 서울에서 가평까지, ITX-청춘 한 번
From Seoul to Gapyeong, One Ride on the ITX-Cheongchun

 

남이섬으로 가는 첫 구간은 기차입니다. 청량리역에서 ITX-청춘을 타면 가평역까지 한 시간 남짓이면 도착하고 운행 횟수가 많아 시간을 빡빡하게 계산하지 않아도 됩니다. 출발역은 운행 계통에 따라 달라질 수 있으므로 예매할 때 확인하시기 바랍니다.
The first leg is by train. Take the ITX-Cheongchun from Cheongnyangni Station and you reach Gapyeong Station in a little over an hour. Trains run often, so you need not plan to the minute. The departure station can differ by service, so check when you book.

▶ Two frames ask about time, and they ask different things.

몇 시에 있어요는 그런 편이 있는지를 묻고, 몇 시예요는 정해진 시각을 묻습니다. 배 몇 시에 있어요와 마지막 배가 몇 시예요의 차이가 그것이며, 영어로는 둘 다 what time이 되어 구분이 사라집니다.
몇 시에 있어요 asks whether such a departure exists; 몇 시예요 asks for a fixed time. English renders both as what time, which erases the distinction.

까지는 목적지를 가리키는 조사입니다. 가평역까지, 춘천까지, 서울까지처럼 앞의 장소만 바꾸면 어느 역에서나 그대로 씁니다. 택시에서는 틀이 하나 더 있습니다. [장소]으로 가 주세요이며 공항으로 가 주세요, 호텔로 가 주세요처럼 씁니다.
The particle 까지 marks a destination: 가평역까지, 춘천까지, 서울까지. In a taxi the frame is [place]으로 가 주세요, as in 공항으로 가 주세요 or 호텔로 가 주세요.

장은 표를 세는 단위입니다. 한 장, 두 장, 세 장으로 숫자만 바꾸며 어른 자리에 학생이나 아이를 넣어도 됩니다.
장 counts tickets: 한 장, 두 장, 세 장. Swap 어른 for 학생 or 아이 as needed.

 

예매는 코레일 앱과 홈페이지에서 할 수 있고 역 창구에서도 표를 살 수 있습니다. 온라인 가입 절차가 막히면 창구가 가장 확실한 방법입니다. 주말 오전 열차는 먼저 마감되는 경우가 많으므로 일정이 정해지면 미리 끊어 두시기 바랍니다.
You can book through the KORAIL app or website, or buy at the station counter. If the online sign-up gives you trouble, the counter is the surest option. Weekend morning trains sell out first, so book as soon as your plans are set.

다른 지역까지 기차로 이동할 계획이라면 외국인 전용 철도 패스인 코레일패스를 함께 비교해 보셔도 좋습니다. 좌석이 지정된 열차라 서서 가는 일이 없고, 창밖으로 북한강이 나타나기 시작하면 가평이 가까워졌다는 뜻입니다.
If you plan to travel to other regions by train, compare the KORAIL Pass, sold only to foreign travelers. Seats are assigned, so you never stand, and when the Bukhangang River appears outside the window, Gapyeong is close.

 

 

2. 가평역에서 선착장까지
From Gapyeong Station to the Ferry Dock

 

가평역에서 남이섬 선착장까지는 약 2킬로미터입니다. 걸어가면 25분에서 30분 정도 걸리고 택시나 시내버스를 이용하면 5분이면 도착합니다. 고르실 때 쓰는 말부터 확인하십시오.
It is about two kilometers from Gapyeong Station to the dock. Walking takes twenty-five to thirty minutes; a taxi or local bus gets you there in five. Start with the words you use to choose.

▶ 택시를 탈 때는 목적지만 또박또박 말하면 됩니다.

▶ In a taxi you only need to say your destination clearly.

남이섬 선착장으로 가 주세요, 이 한 문장이면 통합니다. 역 앞에 대기 중인 택시가 있어 따로 부르지 않아도 됩니다.
남이섬 선착장으로 가 주세요 is enough. Taxis wait in front of the station, so you do not need to call one.

짐이 가볍고 날씨가 좋다면 걸어도 좋습니다. 강을 따라 이어지는 길이라 첫 풍경을 미리 만나는 셈이 됩니다. 다만 한여름과 한겨울에는 무리하지 마시고 택시를 권합니다.
If your bag is light and the weather is good, walking is fine. The road runs along the river, so you get your first view before you arrive. In midsummer and midwinter, take a taxi instead.

가평 시티투어버스도 이 구간을 지납니다. 이 버스는 아침고요수목원과 쁘띠프랑스처럼 가평을 대표하는 곳들을 함께 돕니다. 남이섬 하루와는 동선이 다르므로 이 코스는 다른 글에서 따로 다루겠습니다.
The Gapyeong City Tour Bus also runs this route, looping around signature spots such as the Garden of Morning Calm and Petite France. That path differs from a Nami Island day, so it will be covered separately.

 

 

3. 배를 타고 들어가는 5분
Five Minutes Across the Water

 

남이섬으로 들어가는 가장 일반적인 방법은 배입니다. 강 위를 가로지르는 짚와이어로 들어가는 방법도 있지만 대부분의 방문객은 선착장에서 배를 탑니다. 선착장은 경기도 가평에 있지만 섬 자체는 강원특별자치도 춘천에 속합니다. 강 하나를 건너면서 행정구역이 바뀌는 셈입니다.
The most common way onto the island is by ferry. A zip wire crosses the river as well, but most visitors board at the dock. The dock sits in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, while the island belongs to Chuncheon in Gangwon State. Crossing one river takes you into a different administrative region.

요금은 바뀔 수 있으므로 방문 전에 공식 안내를 확인하십시오. 매표소와 선착장에서는 듣는 말도 정해져 있습니다. 알아듣기만 해도 줄에서 헤매지 않습니다.
Fares can change, so check the official notice before you go. What you hear at the window and the dock is fixed too, and understanding it keeps you from getting lost in the queue.

▶ 결항입니다와 매진됐습니다는 반드시 구분해 두십시오.

결항의 항은 배편이나 항공편을 뜻합니다. 결항입니다를 들으면 오늘 그 배는 뜨지 않습니다. 매진됐습니다는 표가 없다는 뜻이니 하나는 배가 안 뜨는 것이고 하나는 자리가 없는 것입니다.
The 항 in 결항 refers to a sailing or a flight, so 결항입니다 means the ferry is not running today. 매진됐습니다 means the tickets are gone. One is no boat, the other is no seat.

보여 주세요와 타세요는 형태만 보면 부탁이지만 승선 안내에서는 지시로 작동합니다. 다음 배 타세요를 들으면 다음 배를 타도 된다는 뜻이 아니라 이번 배는 못 탄다는 뜻입니다.
보여 주세요 and 타세요 look like requests but function as instructions at the gangway. 다음 배 타세요 does not mean you may take the next ferry; it means you are not getting on this one.

 

 

4. 섬 한 바퀴, 두 시간에서 세 시간
One Loop Around the Island, Two to Three Hours

 

배에서 내리면 차가 사라집니다. 남이섬 안에서는 걷거나 자전거를 타고 움직입니다. 이 점이 남이섬을 특별하게 만듭니다. 섬 안 안내판에 적힌 이름부터 확인하십시오.
The moment you step off the ferry, cars disappear. On the island you get around on foot or by bicycle, and that is what makes it what it is. Start with the names written on the signs inside.

곧게 뻗은 나무가 양쪽에 늘어서 있어 어느 계절에 가도 사진이 남습니다. 이 길을 천천히 통과하는 데만 20분 남짓 걸리고, 이른 아침 물안개가 낀 시간이 가장 아름답습니다. 이어서 중앙잣나무길과 자작나무길로 넘어가면 한 시간이 더 지나갑니다.
Tall, straight trees line both sides, so every season leaves you with a photograph. Walking its length unhurried takes about twenty minutes, and it is at its best in the early morning mist. Continue to the Central Pine Nut Tree Lane and the Birch Lane and another hour goes by.

쉬지 않고 섬을 한 바퀴 도는 데 두 시간, 사진을 찍고 앉아 쉬는 시간까지 넣으면 세 시간으로 잡으시면 됩니다. 드라마 촬영지로 알려진 이후 오랫동안 여행자가 끊이지 않는 곳이라 섬 곳곳에 조형물과 포토존이 마련되어 있고, 식당과 카페도 안에 있어 끼니를 밖에서 해결하지 않아도 됩니다.
A full loop without stopping takes two hours; allow three with photos and rests. Travelers have never stopped coming since it became known as a drama filming location, so sculptures and photo spots are set up across the island, and restaurants and cafes inside mean you do not have to leave for a meal.

 

 

5. 돌아오는 배와 하루 계획
The Ferry Back and Planning Your Day

 

가장 중요한 것은 돌아오는 시간입니다. 섬에서 나오는 마지막 배 시각과 서울로 가는 기차 시간을 함께 계산해야 합니다. 권하는 일정을 표로 정리했습니다.
The most important thing is your return time. Work out the last ferry off the island and your train back to Seoul together. The recommended schedule is laid out below.
