Korean Delivery Phrases: Parcels and Convenience Stores

by Hunmin Institute(훈민학당) 2026. 8. 11.

In Korea, a parcel usually arrives without anyone meeting anyone.

A parcel in Korea meets a person in only two places: the convenience store counter and the driver's phone call.
Learn the Korean for picking one up, sending one out, and reporting one that went missing.

Key Expressions in This Lesson

The lines that come up around parcels are fixed, and they change with where you are standing. Take in these eight sentences first, then move into the main text. The two columns are not one paired conversation; learn each side on its own.

These eight lines are covered two at a time across Sections 2 through 5.

Delivery Without Meeting Anyone

Receiving a parcel in Korea does not take much Korean. Packages flow along three routes, the doorstep, the parcel locker, and the convenience store, and hardly anyone meets anyone along the way. A text arrives, and a few days later so does the box.

That makes the places where words are needed narrow and clear: giving your name and number at a convenience store counter, and taking the driver's call. Without these few sentences, you have no way of finding out where your parcel went.

One more thing worth knowing. Nobody being home does not mean a parcel may be left anywhere. The standard delivery terms issued by the Korea Fair Trade Commission require the driver to leave a notice and hold the parcel at the depot. The easiest way to receive something and the safest way are not always the same, and that gap comes back in Sections 2 and 5.

▶ Parcels travel along three routes.

The doorstep, the parcel locker, and the convenience store. Which one it takes is decided by the delivery notes you write when ordering and by a single call from the driver. The first half of this post covers those two moments; the second half covers what to say when the parcel is gone.

Delivery Notes and the Driver's Call

One line in the delivery notes box when you order removes most of the conversation. Even so, if nobody is home or the main entrance is locked, the phone rings. What is said then is short and predictable. The table below holds both what you hear and what you say.

Please put it in the parcel locker.
When the building has lockers
I will give you the entrance door code.

When you want it handed to you

Swap-in Pattern  Please leave it with [place].

▶ Asking for doorstep delivery is a choice between convenience and compensation.

Write leave it at the door in the notes and no call comes, which is convenient. But if you asked for that and the parcel then disappears, the carrier may bear no liability. For anything of value, do not specify the door; take it in person or use a parcel locker. Swap the place in the pattern and it keeps working:

Picking Up at a Convenience Store

A parcel sent to a convenience store can be collected once the arrival text lands. Two things are said at the counter: what you came for, and your name with the last digits of your phone number. This table, too, holds both what you hear and what you say.

Swap-in Pattern  Could you check [noun]?

▶ 뒷번호 means the last four digits of your phone number.

Korean shops usually verify you with the last digits of your number rather than the whole thing. Give your name exactly as it was entered on the order; if you ordered in the Latin alphabet, saying it that way is quicker. Swap the noun in the pattern and it keeps working:

Sending From a Convenience Store

Sending takes a few more sentences than collecting, because you have to settle who pays, what is inside, and what it is worth. Returns are dropped off here as well. This table, too, holds both what you hear and what you say.

When asking what to write on the waybill
Swap-in Pattern  I will send it [noun].

▶ Leave the value box empty and compensation stops at 500,000 won.

Leave the declared value off the waybill and what you can recover after an incident is capped at 500,000 won. Write it in and the figure you wrote becomes the basis. Where the loss came from the driver's intent or gross negligence, though, the cap does not apply even if you left it blank. Swap the noun in the pattern and it keeps working:

What the translator misses

맡기다 and 부치다, Two Ways of Handing Something Over

The 맡기다 in 경비실에 맡겨 주세요 from the previous section usually comes back from a translator as leave. But leave only says you put it down and walked away, while 맡기다 carries the sense that the other person will keep it safe for you. That is why it goes with people: Where no person is involved, as with a parcel locker, Korean uses 넣다 instead.

부치다 also lands as send, but it is not interchangeable with 보내다. It is used only when something travels through a carrier: You do not use it for sending a person or a text message. Checking luggage at the airport, 짐을 부치다, belongs to the same family.

When Something Goes Wrong

When a parcel does not arrive or arrives broken, the first thing to do is report it. Who carries the responsibility turns on one question: did you ask for it to be left at the door, or did the driver decide that on his own. This table, too, holds both what you hear and what you say.

▶ Who chose the spot is what decides the liability.

If the driver left it at your door without your agreement and it then vanished, that is treated as the carrier's fault. If you were the one who asked for the door, the carrier may bear no liability. When you report it, do not rely on a phone call alone; use something that leaves a record. If it later comes down to when you said what, certified mail is what stands as proof. If the carrier will not engage, you can file with the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center.

Parcels ask little Korean of you: one call from the driver, one counter at the convenience store, and one more call when something goes wrong. If you carry only three lines away from today, make them 택배 찾으러 왔어요, 경비실에 맡겨 주세요, and 배송 완료라는데 물건이 없어요. Work through the vocabulary list below before you go.

FAQ

Q1. If I asked for doorstep delivery and it disappears, who is liable?

A1. Where you specified it, the carrier may bear no liability. Where you never agreed and the driver left it there anyway, it is treated as the carrier's fault. For anything of value, skip the doorstep and take it in person or use a parcel locker.

Q2. Do I really have to write the value on the waybill?

A2. Leave it blank and compensation is capped at 500,000 won. Write it in and that figure becomes the basis. Where the loss came from the driver's intent or gross negligence, the cap does not apply even without it.

Q3. What if I only notice the damage later?

A3. You must report it within fourteen days of receiving it. Past that, the liability is gone. Take photographs when you report, and use a method that leaves a record rather than a phone call alone.

Q4. How long will a convenience store hold my parcel?

A4. It varies by store and by carrier. Usually you have a few days from the arrival text, after which the parcel is sent back. The exact date is in the text itself, and you can simply ask at the counter how long it will be held.

Q5. I ordered under a Latin-alphabet name. Can I still collect it?

A5. Yes. Just give the name exactly as it was entered on the order. If it was in the Latin alphabet, spell it out that way, and if the search still fails, give the last digits of your phone number together with the tracking number.

Answer: ①

You are collecting something left in the store's keeping, so the verb is 찾다. 만들다 in ② is for making something new, 배우다 in ③ takes knowledge or a skill as its object, and 심다 in ④ is for planting in the ground, none of which go with a parcel.
