In the subway you never have to address anyone; the announcements do the talking.
Learn the gate, the platform, the four onboard phrases and your exit.

Key Expressions in This Lesson

Only a few lines pass in the subway. The two columns are not paired dialogue; each sentence is learned on its own, and most of the left-hand ones come from announcements rather than from people.

The first row is covered in Section 1, the second in Section 2, the third in Section 3, and the fourth in Section 4.

Tap In, Tap Out

You called in the restaurant, answered in the cafe, and wrote for delivery. In the subway you need say nothing at all. Tap in, ride, tap out, done.

The catch is the last step. Tapping out is not how you open the gate; it is how the fare is decided. Korean subway fares run by distance, so without the exit tap there is no record of how far you went.

So since the first train on 7 March 2026 an exit-tag penalty applies. Ride only the metropolitan subway network and leave without tapping out, and a base fare is added automatically the next time you tap in. First, the fares and the cards.

 You tap twice.

Once going in, once coming out. Skip the second tap and the fare never settles, so a base fare is added at your next entry. Get into the habit of watching for the amount on the gate display.

Single-use tickets cost more and get no transfer discount. If you will ride more than once a day, a rechargeable card wins, and convenience stores and station machines both sell them.

Direction Is Written as the Last Stop

Past the gate the next problem waits: which platform. Korean subways do not label directions as inbound and outbound. They use the name of the station at the end of the line.

So 사당 방면 means the direction toward Sadang Station. Your own stop need not be Sadang; if the train runs that way, that is your platform. Check the map first for which end your destination sits toward.

Start with the expressions you will use here. These go back and forth on the platform.

[seongsu bangmyeon seunggangjangeun oenjjogimnida]
The platform toward Seongsu is on the left.
[i banghyang majayo]
Is this the right direction?
[i yeolchaneun geuphaeng yeolchaimnida]
This train is an express.
[igeo uri yeoge seoyo]
Does this stop at my station?
[ibeon yeogeseo bandaepyeoneuro garatasigi baramnida]
Please change to the opposite platform here.
[bandaero tasseoyo]
I got on going the wrong way.
[anjeonseon bakkeuro mulleona jusigi baramnida]
Please stand back behind the safety line.
[ihoseon majayo]
Is this Line 2?

 Express trains skip stations.

Express trains call only at major stations and run past the rest. When you hear 급행, check the platform display for whether your stop is on the list.

If you boarded the wrong way, get off at the next stop and cross to the other platform. Many stations let you cross inside; where you must exit, re-entering within the allowed window avoids a second fare.

방면 marks a direction, not a destination. Boarding a 사당 방면 train does not mean riding to Sadang; it means heading that way.

Four Phrases to Catch in the Announcements

Once aboard, the announcements never stop. You do not need to follow all of them. Four phrases are enough to keep you from missing your stop.

They are 이번 역, 잠시 후, 내리실 문 and 갈아타실 분. The order is fairly fixed: the 잠시 후 warning comes first, then 이번 역 as you pull in.

[ilhoseoneuro garatasil buneun ibeon yeogeseo naerisigi baramnida]
Passengers transferring to Line 1, please get off here.
[yeogiseo garatayo]
I transfer here.

Do not confuse ibeon yeok with daeum yeok.

이번 역 is the stop you have reached; 다음 역 is the one after. 잠시 후 서울역에 도착하겠습니다 means you are not there yet, while 이번 역은 서울역입니다 means the doors are opening now.

Announcements usually run in Korean and then English, but the English version often gives only the station name, so transfer details may exist in Korean alone.

People usually move toward the doors before the train stops. In a crowd, saying 내릴게요 as you pass gets you a path.

Without the Exit Number You Are Lost Aboveground

Getting off the train is not the end. Large stations have more than ten exits, and the one you choose can put you hundreds of meters off. That is why arrangements in Korea name an exit number, not just a station.

Transfers work the same way. Corridor signs carry the line number and its color, and direction is again written as the name of the last stop.

Start with the expressions you will use here. These go back and forth as you head for the street.

[myeot beon chulgueseo bolkkayo]

[ibeon chulgueseo mannayo]
Let us meet at Exit 2.
[ihoseoneun ijjogimnida]
Line 2 is this way.
[ihoseon eodiyeyo]
Where is Line 2?
[gaechalgu anjjoge itseumnida]
It is inside the gates.
[hwajangsil eodiyeyo]
Where is the restroom?

The exit number is part of the plan.

Meet me at Gangnam Station is not enough. It takes a number, as in Gangnam Station Exit 11, and Koreans arrange it that way among themselves. Station signs list what stands above each exit, so pick the one showing your destination.

Restrooms sit inside the gates at some stations and outside at others, so it is safer to use one before you leave.

The 2번 of Exit 2 and the 이번 of 이번 역 sound alike. Tell them apart by what follows, the exit or the stop.

The Korean you need in the subway is what to ask when the gate stops you, how to confirm a direction, the four phrases in the announcements, and how to find your exit. Listening outweighs speaking here, so pick out those four rather than tuning the announcements out.

Answer ▾

Answer: ④ 1

The notice says the transfer discount applies to transit cards only, so ④ contradicts it. ① follows from the line about tapping on the way out, ② from the added fare, and ③ from the deposit refund. The item type modeled here is TOPIK I Reading [40–42].

FAQ

Q1. Answer ▾
Q1. Where do I buy a transit card?

A1. Station machines and convenience stores both sell them. You pay for the card, then load whatever amount you want. Leftover balance can be refunded later, and the card also works at convenience stores.

Q2. Answer ▾
Q2. If I have to exit the gate to switch platforms, do I pay again?

A2. Re-entering the same station within a set window avoids a second fare, though the rule varies by line and operator. Before you leave, check the platform again for a way to cross inside.

Q3. Answer ▾
Q3. The announcements are too fast to catch the station name.

A3. Displays inside the car and the map above the doors show the next stop, so a missed announcement is not a problem. Learn a few station names by sight and they start landing by ear.

Q4. Answer ▾
Q4. What if I have luggage and there are only stairs?

A4. Most stations have a lift, but its location differs by exit, so follow the signs. You can also ask
