Opening a Bank Account in Korea as a Foreigner
At a Korean bank counter, the first question is what the account is for.
Your answer and your papers decide how much you can send in month one.

The first row is covered in Section 2, the second in Section 3, the third in Section 4 and the fourth in Section 5, while the lines used before you go to the bank come in Section 1.
Opening the Account Takes Half an Hour

Once you have your alien registration card and a place to live, the bank is next. Opening the account itself is not hard. You hand over documents, sign, and the account opens that day.
What you cannot do right away is send a large sum. Most new accounts are issued with a limit attached. This article covers both the order of opening an account and how to get that limit lifted.
Start with the expressions you will use here. These are the questions you ask before you go in.

The branch matters more than the bank.
Branches that handle many foreign customers know the process and have English materials ready. Try one near a university or an industrial complex, or the bank your school or employer uses.
Counter service generally closes at four in the afternoon. Coming back because one document was missing is common, so the morning is the safer slot.
What to Bring to the Bank

[ajik beonhoga eopseoyo] I do not have a number yet. |
You can already produce one of these documents today.
If you work, the employment certificate; if you study, the enrollment certificate; if you signed for a room, the lease contract. Most people already hold one of the three. Bring it on the day you open the account and one visit may be enough.
As of 2026, major commercial banks do not support fully remote account opening for foreigners; verifying the card requires an in-person or video check. Some internet-only banks do allow remote opening, but the limit rises only after the card is verified.
More banks now accept the mobile version of the card, though this varies by branch, so bring the physical card as well.
What Is Said at the Counter

Once you hand over the documents, one question always comes. What will this account be used for? Since August 2024, confirming the purpose of a financial transaction has been required by law.
A vague answer leaves the limit in place. Be specific: to pay rent, to receive a salary.
Start with the expressions you will use here. These go back and forth as you state your purpose and fill in the forms.
Listening |
Speaking |
|---|---|
[eotteon tongjang mandeusigeyo] What kind of account are you opening? |
[wolse jadongiche haryeogoyo] It is for automatic rent payments. |
[yeogi seomyeonghae juseyo] Please sign here. |
[yeogie sseumyeon dwaeyo] Do I write it here? |
[chekeukadeudo mandeureo deurilkkayo] Would you like a debit card as well? |
[ne, gachi hae juseyo] Yes, please do that too. |
[aep seolchineun hasyeosseoyo] Have you installed the app? |
[injeungseoneun eotteoke badayo] How do I get the certificate? |
There are two kinds of certificate, and they behave differently.
The joint certificate is valid for one year and is stored on your device. Change computers and you have to move it, and the issuing process tends to be harder for foreigners.
The financial certificate is valid for three years and is stored in the bank’s cloud. It survives a change of device, which usually makes it the easier option for foreigners. If the teller asks which one, say you want the financial certificate.
For stating a purpose, 하려고요 is the easiest frame. Change the word in front and it works at any counter, not just a bank.
What a Limited Account Is

This is not something applied because you are a foreigner. Most new accounts open this way for Koreans too. It exists to stop accounts opened in someone else’s name from being used for crime.
Action |
Daily limit |
Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| 돈을 받을 때 [don badeul ttae] Receiving money |
No limit |
Your salary arrives normally, which is why the problem shows up late |
| 앱이나 인터넷뱅킹으로 보낼 때 [aebina inteonetbaengkingeuro bonael ttae] App or internet banking |
1 million won |
This is where a deposit transfer or any large payment stops |
| 현금인출기에서 뽑거나 보낼 때 [hyeongeuminchulgieseo ppopgeona bonael ttae] At an ATM |
1 million won |
Separate from debit card payments |
| 창구에서 직접 처리할 때 [changgueseo jikjeop cheorihal ttae] At the teller counter |
3 million won |
In a hurry, a branch visit moves more than the app allows |
Start with the expressions you will use here. These go back and forth as you check the limit.
Listening |
Speaking |
|---|---|
[handojehangyejwaro nagamnida] It will be issued as a limited account. |
[hando eolmakkaji dwaeyo] How much is the limit? |
[aebeseoneun baengman wonkkajiyeyo] In the app, up to one million won. |
[changgueseoneun deo dwaeyo] Can I do more at the counter? |
[banneun geoseun jehani eopseoyo] There is no limit on receiving. |
[wolgeubeun deureowayo] Will my salary come in? |
[oneureun changgueseo cheorihae deurilgeyo] I will process it at the counter today. |
[jigeum baro bonael su isseoyo] Can I send it right now? |
What is blocked is sending, not receiving.
These figures come from the raise on 2 May 2024, which some banks applied from 10 May. They apply to accounts opened on or after 2 March 2016. Internet-only banks set their own levels, ranging from one to two million won.
A blocked transfer in the app does not mean payment itself is blocked. At a branch, up to three million won goes through. Since that means visiting every time, lifting the limit comes first.
How to Get the Limit Lifted

Time alone does not lift it. You need a document showing what the account is used for. Any one of the following will do.
Document |
When |
Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| 재직증명서와 급여명세서 [jaejikjeungmyeongseowa geubyeomyeongseseo] Employment certificate and pay slip |
From day one |
Ask your company’s HR; this is the strongest document |
| 재학증명서 [jaehakjeungmyeongseo] Enrollment certificate |
From day one |
From the school office or the school website |
| 임대차계약서 [imdaechagyeyakseo] Lease contract |
From day one |
Bring the original you received at signing |
| 본인 명의 공과금 고지서 [bonin myeongui gonggwageum gojiseo] Utility bill in your name |
After a month or two |
Usable once electricity, gas, or phone bills start coming in your name |
Start with the expressions you will use here. These go back and forth as you ask for the limit to be lifted.
Listening |
Speaking |
|---|---|
[seoryu gajyeoosimyeon pureo deurilgeyo] Bring the documents and we will lift it. |
[jaejikjeungmyeongseo naemyeon doenayo] Will a certificate of employment do? |
[i seoryuroneun eoryeoul geot gatayo] I am afraid this document will not be enough. |
[hando eonje pullyeoyo] When will the limit be lifted? |
[geubyeoiche siljeogi isseumyeon ppallayo] A record of salary deposits speeds it up. |
[myeot dal geollyeoyo] How many months does it take? |
[aebeurodo sincheongdoeseyo] You can also apply through the app. |
[aebeseodo dwaeyo] Can I do it in the app too? |
Submitting a document does not guarantee the limit is lifted.
The branch decides. If your documents look thin it can be refused, and they will ask for more. Once submitted, processing usually takes from the same day to a few days, and a record of salary deposits is the fastest route.
At some banks, a few months of salary deposits let you apply through the app. Check the customer service menu in the app before heading to a branch.
That covers opening the account. Bring your card, your passport, and one proof of purpose together, state that purpose specifically, and a single visit may be enough. Even if the lifting is delayed, urgent transfers still go through at the counter.

Answer: ①
Submitting the document is the condition and the limit being lifted is the result, so 면 marks the condition. ② uses the same verb but merely lists two actions, ③ gives a reason or sequence and fits only in part, and ④ is used when the two clauses contrast. The item type modelled here is TOPIK I Reading [34–39].
FAQ
Q1. Answer ▾
Q1. Can I open an account before my alien registration card arrives?
A1. A few banks will open one with just a passport, but the limit is lower and internet banking often cannot be set up. Waiting for the card usually turns out faster.
Q2. Answer ▾
Q2. Which bank is better for foreigners?
A2. The branch matters more than the bank. Branches that handle many foreign customers know the process and have English materials ready. Try one near a university or an industrial complex, or the bank your school or employer uses.
Q3. Answer ▾
Q3. How do I send something large, like a deposit, while the limit is on?
A3. Go to a branch counter. The app allows one million won, the counter three million. Anything larger means lifting the limit first.
Q4. Answer ▾
Q4. Can foreigners use internet-only banks?
A4. Some allow fully remote opening. You need the alien registration card and a Korean phone number, and the limit rises only after the card is verified. Policies change often, so check the bank’s own notice before signing up.
Q5. Answer ▾
Q5. Should I get the joint certificate or the financial certificate?
A5. The financial certificate is usually easier for foreigners. It lasts three years and lives in the cloud, so it survives a change of device. Just tell the teller you want the financial certificate.
