BTS Trail Part 2: Gangneung to Samcheok (앨범 자켓 촬영지로 떠나는 지방 여행 2부, 강릉에서 삼척까지)

 

Hyangho and Maengbang beaches are two hours from Seoul by KTX, an hour apart.
This post gives the one-day route and the Korean you use on trains and at the beach.

향호해변과 맹방해변은 서울에서 KTX로 두 시간, 두 곳은 한 시간 거리입니다.
하루에 묶는 동선과 기차와 해변에서 쓰는 한국어를 함께 익힙니다.

기차역과 해변에서 오가는 말은 몇 마디로 정해져 있습니다. 아래 여섯 문장을 먼저 눈에 담고 본문으로 들어가십시오.
Only a few lines go back and forth at the station and at the beach. Take in these six sentences first, then move into the main text.

1. 기차와 해변에서 쓰는 한국어
The Korean for Trains and Beaches

 

이번 코스는 기차와 버스로 이동합니다. 여기서 쓰는 표현부터 배워 봅시다. 먼저 표를 끊고 승강장을 찾는 말입니다.
This route runs on trains and buses. Start with the expressions used here, beginning with buying a ticket and finding the platform.

▶ 몇은 수를 묻는 말이고, 뒤에 붙는 단위만 바꾸면 어디서나 그대로 쓰입니다.

▶ 몇 asks a number, and you only swap the unit that follows it.

몇 시, 몇 번, 몇 명처럼 씁니다. 틀은 [몇] + [단위]입니다. 답에는 숫자가 오므로 삼 번, 두 시처럼 들으면 됩니다.
Use it as 몇 시, 몇 번, 몇 명. The pattern is [몇] + [unit]. The answer comes back as a number, such as 삼 번 or 두 시.

장은 표처럼 얇고 납작한 것을 세는 말입니다. 한 장, 두 장, 세 장으로 앞의 숫자만 바꾸면 됩니다. 사람을 셀 때는 명이나 분을 쓰므로 두 명, 두 분이 됩니다.
장 counts flat things like tickets: 한 장, 두 장, 세 장. People are counted with 명 or the polite 분, as in 두 명 or 두 분.

 

해변에 도착하면 쓰는 말은 아래와 같습니다.
Once you reach the beach, these are the lines you use.

▶ 돼요는 허락을 묻는 말이고 주시겠어요는 부탁하는 말입니다.

▶ 돼요 asks permission, 주시겠어요 makes a request.

틀은 [동사]아도 돼요와 [동사]아 주시겠어요입니다. 앞의 동사만 바꾸면 들어가도 돼요, 앉아도 돼요, 열어 주시겠어요처럼 다른 자리에서도 그대로 쓰입니다.
The patterns are [verb]아도 돼요 and [verb]아 주시겠어요. Swap the verb and you get 들어가도 돼요, 앉아도 돼요, 열어 주시겠어요.

좀은 부탁을 부드럽게 만드는 말이라 조금이라는 뜻으로 직역하면 어긋납니다. 양을 줄이는 말이 아니라 말투를 낮추는 말이며, 빼고 말해도 뜻은 통하지만 딱딱하게 들립니다.
좀 softens a request, so translating it as a little misses the point. It lowers the tone rather than the amount, and dropping it still works but sounds blunt.

 

 

2. 주문진 향호해변, 바다를 향한 버스정류장
Hyangho Beach, a Bus Stop Facing the Sea

 

강릉시 주문진읍 향호리의 향호해변은 원래 조용한 해수욕장이었습니다. 지금은 백사장 한쪽의 파란 버스정류장으로 사람들이 모입니다.
Hyangho Beach in Jumunjin was once a quiet swimming beach. Now people come for the blue bus stop at one end of the sand.

촬영 당시 임시로 세웠다가 철거한 정류장을 강릉시가 방문객을 위해 다시 만들어 상시 개방했습니다. 실제로 버스가 서지는 않습니다. 이 장면에서 만나는 말부터 확인하십시오.
The stop was put up temporarily for the shoot and taken down, then rebuilt by the city for visitors and left open year-round. No bus actually stops there. Start with the words you meet in this scene.

▶ 정류장은 바다를 등지고 앉는 구조라 인물과 수평선이 한 화면에 들어옵니다.

▶ You sit with your back to the sea, putting you and the horizon in one frame.

오전에는 역광이 되므로 늦은 오후가 낫습니다. 역광은 빛을 등진다는 뜻이 아니라 빛을 마주 본다는 뜻이라 직역하면 반대로 이해하기 쉽습니다.
Mornings backlight the shot, so late afternoon is better. 역광 means facing the light, not having it behind you, which a literal reading easily reverses.

입장료와 개방 시간이 따로 없습니다. 다만 성수기 주말에는 줄이 길어 평일 방문을 권합니다. 줄을 설 때는 앞사람에게 사진 좀 찍어 주시겠어요라고 부탁하면 대부분 흔쾌히 찍어 줍니다. 주문진항이 가까워 회와 물회를 먹기에도 좋습니다.
There is no fee and no set hours. Peak-season weekends bring long lines, so try a weekday. While waiting, ask the person ahead 사진 좀 찍어 주시겠어요 and most will gladly help. Jumunjin Port nearby is good for raw fish.

 

 

3. 삼척 맹방해변, 긴 백사장과 봄의 유채꽃
Maengbang Beach, Long Sands and Spring Canola

 

강릉에서 남쪽으로 한 시간이면 삼척시 근덕면 맹방해변에 닿습니다. 앨범 재킷을 촬영한 자리로 알려지면서 찾는 사람이 크게 늘었습니다.
An hour south of Gangneung lies Maengbang Beach in Samcheok. Visitor numbers rose sharply once it became known as an album cover location.

삼척시가 촬영 소품을 재현해 세웠던 포토존 조형물과 안내 표지판은 소속사의 지식재산권 사용 중지 요청에 따라 2024년 1월 철거되었습니다. 지금 남아 있는 것은 해변 시설로 정비된 파라솔과 썬베드이며, 방문 전에 삼척시 공식 관광 안내로 현재 시설 상태를 확인하시기 바랍니다.
The photo-zone structures and signboards the city had recreated from the shoot were removed in January 2024 at the agency's request over intellectual property use. What remains are parasols and sun beds maintained as beach facilities, so check the city's official tourism information before you go.

▶ 맹방해변은 촬영지가 되기 전부터 삼척을 대표하는 해수욕장이었습니다.

▶ Maengbang was Samcheok's signature beach long before any shoot.

백사장이 길고 완만해 걷기 좋고, 봄에는 근처에 유채꽃밭이 열립니다. 바람이 강한 날에는 파라솔을 접어 두므로 잔잔한 날을 고르시는 편이 낫습니다.
The sand is long and gentle for walking, and canola fields open nearby in spring. On windy days the parasols are folded down, so a calm day is the better pick.

대게는 큰 게라는 뜻이 아니라 다리가 대나무처럼 곧다는 뜻입니다. 크기로 짐작하면 어긋나는 이름이며, 곰치국도 이름과 달리 맵지 않고 맑게 끓인 해장국입니다. 주문할 때는 곰치국 하나 주세요라고 하면 됩니다.
대게 does not mean big crab; the 대 refers to bamboo-straight legs. Likewise 곰치국 is a clear, mild hangover soup despite what the name suggests. To order, say 곰치국 하나 주세요.

 

 

4. 하루 동선으로 묶는 방법
Combining Them into One Day

 

두 곳을 하루에 도는 것이 이번 편의 핵심입니다. 표로 먼저 비교해 보십시오.
Covering both in one day is the point here. Compare them in the table first.

▶ 오전에 서울을 떠나 향호에서 오후를, 맹방에서 일몰을 보는 순서가 가장 무리가 없습니다.

▶ Leave Seoul in the morning, spend the afternoon at Hyangho, and catch the sunset at Maengbang.

서울에서는 청량리역이나 서울역에서 KTX로 강릉역까지 약 두 시간입니다. 강릉역에서 향호해변까지는 택시로 20분, 시내버스로는 40분에서 한 시간을 잡으십시오.
The KTX from Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station reaches Gangneung in about two hours. From there Hyangho is twenty minutes by taxi, or forty minutes to an hour by city bus.

두 해변 사이는 렌터카로 한 시간, 대중교통으로는 갈아타는 시간을 포함해 한 시간 반에서 두 시간입니다. 하루에 도실 계획이면 렌터카를 권합니다. 버스가 끊긴 뒤에는 택시 좀 불러 주세요라고 하면 가게나 숙소에서 불러 줍니다.
Between the beaches it is an hour by car, or ninety minutes to two hours by public transport with a transfer. For one day, take a car. Once the buses stop, say 택시 좀 불러 주세요 and a shop or your lodging will call one.

현장에서는 순서를 지키고 쓰레기를 가지고 나오십시오. 두 곳 모두 지역 주민이 매일 쓰는 해변입니다. 오늘 나온 문장 가운데 딱 세 개만 외우자면 강릉 가는 표 한 장 주세요, 몇 번 승강장이에요, 사진 좀 찍어 주시겠어요입니다. 아래 단어장에서 오늘의 어휘를 정리하고 가시기 바랍니다.
On site, wait your turn and carry your trash out. Both are beaches local residents use every day. If you memorize only three of today's lines, make them 강릉 가는 표 한 장 주세요, 몇 번 승강장이에요, and 사진 좀 찍어 주시겠어요. Work through the vocabulary list below before you go.
