The first row is covered in Section 1, the second in Section 2, and the third in Section 3.
The Confession Begins with “Joahae”

In English, like and love carry different weight, yet in a Korean drama confession the first word out is usually joahae. Start with what is actually said at that moment.

Korean |
What it refers to |
|---|---|
Saying your feelings out loud |
To like; the first verb of a confession |
| 진심 [jinsim] |
A sincere heart |
A joke; something not meant seriously |
Joahae opens the door to a confession; saranghae is spoken once you are through it.
Saying saranghae the first time you reveal your feelings sounds too heavy. So the confession starts with joahae, and once the other person answers nado joahae, the relationship starts to move.
The frame is na [person] joahae. It is casual speech for close relationships; the polite form is joahaeyo.
“Sagwillae?”: The Question That Defines the Relationship

Saying you like someone does not yet make you a couple. Korean dating has a separate moment where you agree to date, so start with that question and its answers.

[saenggakal siganeul jwo] Give me time to think. |

An answer |
Day one of a relationship |
| 시간 [sigan] |
Time; room to think |
-llae asks for the other person’s will, which is why confessions reach for it most.
Narang sagwillae leaves the answer to the other person, while uri sagwija leads toward deciding together. The first asks; the second proposes.
Oneulbuteo iririya means the day you agree to date becomes day one. The hundred-day count starts here.
When “Saranghae” Is First Spoken

Even after dating begins, saranghae does not come right away. In dramas it is usually first spoken once the relationship deepens, so start with the lines exchanged there.
Listening |
Speaking |
|---|---|
[saranghae] I love you. |
[nado saranghae] I love you too. |
[na neo mani joahae] I really like you. |
[nado nega joa] I like you too. |
[wae saranghandago an hae] Why do you not say you love me? |
[mal an haedo aljana] You know without me saying it. |
Korean |
What it refers to |
|---|---|
To love |
To be liked; pairs with i/ga |
| 많이 [mani] |
A lot; very much |
Words; what is said aloud |
Joahada takes eul/reul; jota takes i/ga.
Neoreul joahae and nega joa mean the same thing, but the particles differ. Joahada marks its object with eul/reul; jota marks what is liked with i/ga. Neoreul joa and nega joahae are both mismatched.
Koreans tend not to say saranghae often. That is why answers like mal an haedo aljana appear so often in dramas, and they can become the seed of a conflict.
A confession opens with joahae, is settled with sagwillae, and saranghae comes after. If you memorize only three lines, make them na neo joahae, narang sagwillae, and nado nega joa.

Answer ▾
Answer: ①
Jota marks what is liked with i/ga, so ① is correct. ② pairs with joahada and does not fit before joayo, ③ attaches to places or times, and ④ needs something to compare that the passage does not give. The item type modeled here is TOPIK I Reading [34–39].
FAQ
Q1. Answer ▾
Q1. Can I confess in polite speech with joahaeyo?
A1. Yes. If you have not yet switched to casual speech, joahaeyo is actually the natural choice, and polite confessions appear often in dramas.
Q2. Answer ▾
Q2. Is saranghae used with friends or family?
A2. Yes, between parents and children and among very close friends. Still, the first saranghae between lovers carries special weight.
Q3. Answer ▾
Q3. What do you say to turn down a confession?
A3. People soften it with a reason, as in mianhae, naneun chinguro saenggakaesseo. Saenggakal siganeul jwo is also often read as a refusal on its way.
